Facebook announced the first 20 members of its "supreme court"-style Oversight Board on May 7, 2020. The Board is tasked with handling the most difficult of the content issues which appear on the platform. They will be able to overturn decisions by Facebook and Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg on whether individual pieces of content should be allowed on Facebook and Instagram, with these decisions being based on Facebook’s Community Standards, Facebook’s Values, and all relevant International Human Rights Standards. It is clear that the Board has paid special attention to the issue of misinformation from its first rulings. However, the Board still believes that all decisions regarding misinformation should be based on the three standards stated above. Protecting the freedom of speech on the platform is the paramount principle for platform governance.
